On April 2, 2020 the NY Court of Appeals struck down a portion of the controversial Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act (HSTPA). The ruling had a tremendous impact across the real estate industry, preventing what might have been a catastrophe for many New York property owners. The court’s decision favored landlords, ruling that rent overcharges should not be applied retroactively.
